Mothers Unite was started by a mother (Carol Jacobs) who realized that the children in her neighbourhood were not receiving a minimum of one meal a day. In 2008, three mothers started working with 30 children between the ages of 4 – 18 years from a mother’s home in Hillview, Lavender Hill.
In 2014, the numbers have grown to 152 children registered to the organisation. The children we serve are neglected of physical, as well as emotional, spiritual and educational needs. At Mothers Unite, we place emphasis on embracing the children holistically.
We focus on five developmental programs: Nutrition, Literacy, Education, Sustainability, and Healing, which can be viewed in greater detail in our Projects area.
We give preference to children that attend school regularly and encourage children to complete their schooling. We also work with the family as a whole, and in some instances provide a support base for adults in our various projects. Mothers Unite provides opportunities to transfer useful skills to adult males and female volunteers that become involved in Mothers Unite.
Our motto is “Growing together to feed the needs of our children”.
The Heart of Mothers Unite
Mothers Unite is different from other organisations; it started within the heart of a mother living in the community of Lavender Hill. Our goal is to meet the needs of the child in a holistic manner.
We understand that mothers’ play a huge role in the lives of our children. So many mothers’ raise their children single handedly amidst the challenges of crime, poverty, gangsterism and drugs. Mothers Unite wants to help children achieve their potential and make a difference in the lives of our child community members.
The children we work with are disadvantaged, vulnerable and have a very poor self-esteem. Even though many of the children are restrained by poverty, crime, gangsterism and drugs, they are extremely talented. If we as parents, an organisation, and the greater community can provide a medium whereby children can explore, express and showcase their talent, we know disadvantaged children will improve their self image by believing in themselves and working towards their dreams and goals. We will surely discover that they have much more to offer than what is visible to the eye at present.
Mothers Unite understands that we must be the voice and ambassadors of the child.
We believe the heart of a mother displayed in an organisation – God is the founder of Mothers Unite and we are His servants.
Mothers Unite is governed by a Managing Board that acts as an advisory body and adds value to the organisation through their various skills and expertise.
